Composting Toilets on Phillip Island

During 2001, "Soltran/Rota-Loo" composting toilets were installed at three locations on Phillip Island:
beachside car parks at Anzacs Beach and Forresr Caves and a clifftop car park at Pyramid Rock.

The areas are remote from water and power supplies and are in environmentally sensitive areas with respect to drainage issues. Conventional toilets would not have been a realistic option in these heavily-utilised sites.

The Soltran/Rota-Loos made possible a necessary service to one of Australia's prime surf beaches without the drain on Phillip Island's water supply that would otherwise have occurred.

All structures were designed in a way that made them eff cient to construct with a consequent saving in labour costs. They have continued to work effectively throughout the year and have required only routine hygiene maintenance.

Users of the toilets in the first two locations are predominantly surfers. They have been vocal in their praise that a facility is now available to them and have shown an understanding of the philosophy behind using composting toilets. In fact, they have been supportive of other landscaping and erosion mitigation works in the surrounding area and little or no vandalism has occurred at this stage.

The Pyramid Rock site is used by general sightseers and is often a venue for night time gatherings by young local people. As with the other two facilities, a water supply to this area was not a costeffective option. Again, the composting toilets have been respected and vandalism has been minimal.

Phillip Island Nature Park appreciates the commitment shown by Environment Equipment Pty Ltd in creating and promoting these environmentally-friendly structures. They accord with our philosophy of sustainability and minimum-impact visitation to sensitive areas.

The park has one more kit in storage ready to build in the new year and we are lookingforward to providingyet another facility in an area where it has until now been
impractical to do so.
